Could you give an example of this? I'm curious how fan ficcers do it.

With media, I'm like you, I just ignore or drop shows really fast if they try to pretend to be something they're not.

I very much dislike the trend of people using shallow token characters or plots as their 'representation'. That's not what representation means, c'mon now.

I like text and I like subtext, but they are absolutely not the same thing, and I get very sick of people reccing "canon gay" when it's not.

Some people don't think something counts as "canon gay", though, unless there are sex scenes, even when it's super obvious. (Hannibal would be an example.)
