#1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith, set in Botswana, might be what you're thinking of

I would definitely count that as a "cosy." They're lovely books.

#1 Ladies Detective Agency is the best, and I'm not even into mysteries, cozy or otherwise! The characters are awesome and adorable. I love how each chapter is a story unto itself (while still being part of the overarching plot and character threads of the book) so the books great for situations where you only have time to read in fits and starts or just want to read a little something before bed, rather than tucking in for several hours of uninterrupted reading.
