They were irritating. I'm at least glad the helpfulness/irritation quotient was more evenly split between them compared to the book where the boy both knows dinosaurs and computers and the girl is just annoying without any useful traits.

Oh, wow, I'd forgotten that about the book. Mr Crichton, wtf were you thinking?

Grant liked the kids and talking about dinosaurs with them in the book

Yeah me too. As a kid, I hated most characters that were supposed to be my age because I found them so obnoxious and unrelatable. Lex and Tim aren't the worst I've come across, but still they make me want to bash my head against a wall.

This coming from a girl who was (still is) all about dinosaurs and was thrilled to see other girls/women in a movie with dinosaurs.

Yeah I hated them as a kid too. Weirdly enough, I don't mind them now. They're just kids.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-23 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get this secret. Are you... proud of hating kids? Do you think that finding some fictional kids really annoying when you were a kid made you a genius or something? Maybe I'm just reading this wrong or something.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-23 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but it's not about being proud, it's about the entire fucking world jamming down your throat how wonderful kids are and how you'll change your mind when you have them/have to deal with them on a consistent basis for whatever reason, and... it's allowed to not like them. It's perfectly okay to not want to be around kids and think they're annoying. And they didn't even allow Dr. Grant that.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-23 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
And yet some people do change their minds, nonny. There's no dignity attached to either experience.

NAYRT

In a world that encourages one kind of opinion, people with the other opinion might get frustrated about it and make a secret about it here on fandom secrets dot com

Go away.

Weird response to a neutral statement of fact.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-24 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
And some people detransition, yet you'd still be an ass for insisting every trans person is jyst going through a phase and will change their mind later on.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-24 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
You think being consciously child free is in someway comparable to being trans?

Geez you fucking people. Anything to play the victim huh.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-23 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're reading the secret wrong and also, you might be happier if you took that chip off your shoulder. It's just secrets about fandom, there really isn't any need for it.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-23 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It was fine for him to not like kids, it just made for a slightly more layered characterization (and some funny moments) when he stepped up to take care of them in a survival situation, than would have if he loved them.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-24 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a child person but I really didn't mind those kids. I would have had the same attitude as Alan, ie not my problem but when the chips are down I'm gonna protect them, followed by grudging respect.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-24 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same. I also found them and their reactions to everything to be really believable and actually kid-like for the most part, which makes them at least 80% less annoying than many other kids in movies and TV shows, who tend to behave as if the writers had never met a kid in their lives. Sure, they were a little too "genius prodigies" about some things, but a teen with somewhat advanced computer skills (excuse me, "hacking") and a kid who knows a lot about dinosaurs are also not that far out of the realm of possibility, so I can't even be too mad about that aspect of their characters.

Did I write this secret in my sleep? Haha, I agree totally, OP.
