Same.
I don't watch cdramas at all and I didn't see the problem in that pic but I don't have wig spotting experience.

It's sort of okay looking on the adults, but seeing those weird sideburns on the baby characters just looks silly.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-24 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Same.

I used to watch CDramas in the past and the wigs used in historical and fantasy dramas always bugged me. Not enough to stop watching obviously, but it was always this niggling feeling of why do the wigs look like that.

I haven’t watched the show, but their hair has never really bothered me in pictures. I assume they’re meant to look otherworldly, for one thing. Also, being white, there’s a degree to which my brain just shrugs, like, “I’m not an authority on Asian hair, what do I know.”

this picture is hilarious to use for this secret aha

i do think the hair looks very polished in a way that doesn't seem natural, but at the same time i don't really care and it never impacts my enjoyment of any C or K-Drama where the actors are wearing wigs.

I fricking love The Untamed but this secret is HILAROUS omg. Ace picture choice too!

See also: the sun glinting off the polyester strands of their wigs in outdoor scenes. XD Luckily for me, it doesn't distract me from the show but I can see how it could be jarring.

I SAID THIS well not exactly this but I was bitching about it on a secret about Untamed some weeks ago, it was a tangent but I felt like saying it. So, basically, I agree wholeheartedly, anon.

Given how absolutely gorgeous those costumes are, it's not like they don't have the money for a nicer lacefront that blends much more naturally with the hairline. Or even just extensions! It can't be a case of budget. All I can ever think when a costume-and-makeup department hyperfocuses on one facet and phones in another is that someone there just really isn't good at managing the director's vision, or that at some point the producers/directors literally don't notice how absolutely shit some parts of the costumes are because...idk they've got a lot on their plate but it's also really easy to distract a bigwig by pointing out your leather tooling and hoping they don't notice your terrible polyester fabric choices.

As someone who doesn't watch foreign dramas ... could it just be the aesthetic they're going for? Like that TOO PERFECT look?

I know at various points European ladies would pluck hair to get a higher hair line. I guess it's possible other cultures would want a super-dense hair line?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-23 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That was my assumption. They're not going for realism; they're going for style.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-24 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
thirding this suspicion, i think the "fakeness" is an aesthetic

(Anonymous) 2020-08-23 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ngl, it was super distracting at first, but I had to pay more attention to people's faces and clothes in order to figure out who was who, so I wasn't focused on the hair. The story and characters were compelling enough that it didn't bother me.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-23 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Lmao excellent picture choice here

Lifetime and Hallmark movies have bad wigs too and I kinda feel the same way, nonny, it is very distracting

The wigs are ridiculous but I don't mind because my formative TV watching experience was Doctor Who's rubber monsters.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-24 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
After growing up watching Power Rangers try to pretend the stuntmen in obviously plastic and rubber suits were totally a threat and couldn't be beaten by tipping the poor sap onto his back like a turtle, the occasional dodgy wig barely registers for me anymore.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-23 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't mind that much if they were all more or less the same quality(at least for non-background characters) but some of the wigs are so SO much worse than some of the others, and not even just for unimportant side characters either. By far the worst offender in The Untamed is Nie Huaisang's wig though. Seriously, I have never seen someone who looks this much worse with long hair than with short hair and while it's definitely a matter of the actor just not being suited for long hair, the atrocious quality and fit of that wig is the main culprit there.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-24 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
They're just so unnaturally thick.

The thickness of the sideburns crack me up whenever I see screenshots.

Same, anon. It's the extremely voluminous, ridiculously points sideburns that I can't help staring at every time I see a picture of those shows. They just make the entire thing look more like a helmet rather than hair.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-24 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
As if hair in Western media is so much better. Women's hair might not generally be wigs, but the ridiculous curls and the shiny volume is always so obviously the work of a professional stylist. It's especially grating for characters who supposedly put no effort in their appearance, but even the "average" TV main character looks just fake and unnatural.

I've long since stopped expecting any kind of realism with hair on TV, and that's doubly true for a show (genre?) as stylized and as close to theater as The Untamed.

It's the sideburns for me; they all have these ridiculously luxurious sideburns that grow a full head of long straight hair in a 2x2cm patch, enough to sweep up into the top bun. Can you imagine how they'd look when they're loose?
