Star Trek Discovery made me wary of creator promises not to Bury Your Gays. They promised that with Stamets and Culber, but they still killed Culber. They brought him back in season 2, yes, but I'm not sure that was the plan all along, since the arc to do so was...weird, even by Trek standards.

i'm convinced that was a grief narrative that they restructured into a resurrection plot, no matter what they say i'm always going to remain convinced that they never intended to bring him back until they got a lot of backlash.

Yeah, that's how it feels to me, too. And, I would have been less upset with that if they hadn't had Winston Cruz assure people that a Bury Your Gays plot wasn't going to happen. (I'd have been disappointed, not only because they were the only queer couple, but because they were fucking delightful. But I would not have been as aghast as I was with the broken promise.)

Had they really promised that? I wasn't paying attention back then, but I had assumed that 1) the seasons are plotted and filmed all at once (so no time to change tracks in the middle of a season like on a traditional US broadcast TV 25-episode season with a mid-season break), and 2) they had always intended to kill off Culber and that's why Culber is boring.

I haven't been able to find the interview again, since it's swamped by more recent stuff. But back when the series was starting, Culber's actor, Wilson Cruz (I mistyped above), was interviewed and stated that he knew fans were worried about it happening (and that he initially had misgivings, as well), and stated that that wasn't the case.

Some of the more recent stuff is from just before the first season ended, and he was talking about them telling him he was going to be coming back (though apparently he didn't know he was going to return as a regular), so maybe his return was always the plan, though. (He still mentioned the Bury Your Gays in at least a couple of the interviews.)

They actually promised it immediately after the episode happened because they anticipated that people would feel betrayed by Bury Your Gays and wanted to assure them immediately that that had never been the plan. They always intended to bring him back.

I finally found the interview I was thinking of, and...yeah, you're right. I totally misremembered.
