I’m not sure if this counts, but I’ve been a chronic nail biter for most of my life. I’d bite off the nail and surrounding skin until I bled and kept going even when it started to hurt. I’ve been trying really hard to stop and I’ve gone almost month without biting them.

For me, what worked was figuring out why I did it because just putting bitter nail polish on my nails didn’t work (also, I got used to the nasty taste after a while and kept biting my nails, which then gave me a stomachache). It wasn’t because of boredom or anxiety, but because I didn’t like how my nails felt when I scratched myself. I hated that feeling, so I bit them to keep them short. Now I do my best to trim them as short as I can without hurting myself (and I have cut myself a few times while trimming them) and filing them. Every time I feel an urge to bite, I trim and file.

It sounds so easy that it feels ridiculous to say that it took me so long to figure out the why and a solution to the problem, but here we are. Also, I wonder if I’ll go back to biting my nails once I return to in person work and can’t trim and file when I get the urge to bite.

Lifelong nail-biter here, just like Dad (but he was worse)! The longest I've accomplished not biting my fingernails is about four weeks. The urge just came about and I did it. I think I get some pleasure from trimming off the tips of the nails so I don't think a bitter nail polish would prevent me in the end. I'd just fight my way through it! :D
