Re: What are you over?

Well, it's probably the guilt of being ignorant of a system that didn't hurt you but hurt others. And you went along with it, maybe even defended, with good intentions, some assholes who didn't deserve defending, all while an entire group of folks were suffering in silence. And even though you personally didn't contribute to that hell, you got to enjoy a somewhat more peaceful or secure world. Maybe you look back to a time you saw a flag as just a flag, or part of your innocent childhood, or your Southern heritage, not really getting what it represented to the worst of adults. And now you have to process that, and it feels like a kick in the balls.

Well, maybe none of that applies to you, but you can see how people can look back and feel bad about going along with such things, even if they weren't completely aware.

I'm a person of mixed heritage, but in several cases, have passed for white. I can't think of the number of times I've freely driven through town, through any neighborhood, and even across county and state lines, and experienced zero issues. In fact, I've never been pulled over, or had to fear being pulled over, unless I was speeding. It never occurred to me that some people are just harassed in their own vehicles no matter what they're doing, and may be hypervigilant just going on a grocery run.

Of course, I don't go around bashing myself or condemning white people in general or spewing apologies to any perceived person of color. I just resolve to do better and be more aware, and definitely call out racist behavior/beliefs.

Then you should feel sad that some people fear going for a simple drive, not bad that you don't have to fear that. Feeling bad because you don't experience things that nobody should experience doesn't make any sense.

What do you mean it doesn't make sense?

The guilt comes from being a participant in the system that actively oppressed a group of people, whether the participant was aware of it or not.

For example, wouldn't you feel shitty after the fact if one of your friends was being abused and you had NO idea? And any time they tried to say anything about it, you either didn't believe them or minimized their situation, because how could you accept something you didn't see happening? After all, you were friends with the people who abused them or at least were in good standing with them. Also being friends with the abused person, you were a potential ally to them, someone who could have spoken up, done something, to fight the abuse or at least support your friend. But because you were blissfully unaware (or perhaps preferred to remain that way), you did nothing while that person suffered in silence. You did nothing because your reality told you that there was NO way someone could treat them so horribly, when the truth was, that's exactly what was happening.

Now think about that happening on a national scale. Have you ever defended the police for killing someone for any reason? Or just for the reasons you were told? And then found out later that not only was the crime non-violent, but they had the wrong house and will suffer little to no consequences for wrongly killing somebody. Have you ever subscribed to the belief that if you aren't doing anything bad, you shouldn't fear anyone going after you, because people who don't do bad things don't get punished? Oh, and then insisted that was the truth to people for whom that wasn't clearly the truth?

Have you ever insisted to POC that it was just a flag, or harmlessly part of your heritage, without closely examining U.S. history?

If you don't see how people can feel bad about any of that, then I don't know what else to say.

Please explain how individuals can change that system? Because in my long voting life waiting for an option that will shift paradigms and so far there's been fuck all. So no I don’t feel any guilt and I don't think anyone else who also wants genuine change should feel guilt either. Fuck that.
