I thought about giving that book a go but the author's other popular series, Wolfsong, was just so poorly written and tedious that I just couldn't bring myself to try anything else.

I didn't notice it being horribly written. But I didn't read his other series because they looked far more YA than what I wanted to read. I think this is his most recent book so I expect he has gotten better/gotten a better editor.

I only read the first few pages of The House in the Cerulean Sea because I couldn't handle the writing style. Too many adjectives and adverbs for my taste!
