I would add a disclaimer if you choose to post it, acknowledging that it will be somewhat untrue to to historical accuracy and people should be more forgiving than if they went into it expecting near perfect accuracy. As long as there is some effort done or a heads up about it you should be fine.

Seconding this. Personally I would prefer to avoid a story like it and would appreciate to be warned. I'm sure for many people it wouldn't be an issue though.

This is a good idea, OP. I'm not a stickler for historical accuracy, but part of the reason why I would want to read a Regency AU is because I enjoy the setting and fics that make good use out of the setting. I understand completely if people don't want to do heavy research, but it's nice to be warned not to expect close attention to detail.

Fourthing this. I've yeeted too many regencies in which the author is plainly just in it for the bonnets. Which is fine, of course, but warning people is a kind idea - time wasted can never be recovered after all!

Same. It's really disappointing to read a novel that says it's a Regency era novel when the author clearly didn't feel like doing much research and it's very generic bonnets and balls.

"It for the bonnets" is really cracking me up. It's making me think of Micarah Tewers.

OP

Thanks, I will add a disclaimer when I post it! I don't think anything too inaccurate should end up in there because I'm lazy and I basically recycled the settings from Austen novels. My approach to things I don't know is just to avoid mentioning them. *jazz hands*

lmao perfect

"It is better to keep quiet and seem ignorant, than to speak up and remove all doubt"

Except that you'll be providing in the romance category, so who's gonna complain?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-27 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
That's it! Lol

It's not a huge fandom so I feel good contributing something and I'm having fun writing it. Maybe people will enjoy it, maybe not.

I don't think this should even be necessary but it probably is the safest way

I agree with this! When I read historical AUs, I tend to be interested in the details of the setting, but I don't think there's anything wrong with your approach and wouldn't be bothered by a fic that mentioned it had a different focus. FTR, I wouldn't ever be motivated to leave negative comments or anything on a fic without a disclaimer like that, either, just because it wasn't what I expected, but this sounds like a good idea if you want to avoid anyone going in with expectations of in-depth accuracy.
