I don't have the money to go to the movies or buy DVDs (and i don't want a fucking ton of DVDs cluttering up my house, anyway), and I can't afford to just buy stuff that i may end up hating (and can't get my money back on).

So, yeah - I torrent a lot of stuff. And pay for some other stuff. And there is zero guilt.

Seconding the part about buying DVDs. In what universe is buying a physical copy that you don't want, of something you've never seen and might not even like, a good mode of media consumption?

Though personally, the thing that annoys and baffles me most, is that if I want to watch a movie that's not super current, I often can't even find it to "rent" because the streaming rental services seem to mostly just stock the popular stuff.

And then, if I can find said non-current movie to rent, the rental service is usually charging like $5 for the rental. Which is nuts! Nobody who grew up going to Blockbuster is going to be chill with being charged New Release prices to (re)watch Clueless and The Sixth Sense.

So yeah, of course I torrent that shit.

Right?

And WTF - why can't i buy a digital download of some movie i want, with all the extras and commentary and stuff?

I would *actually pay* for that. But not for some damn DVD that my computer hates.

Plus - half the old stuff I want to watch isn't anywhere to buy *or* rent, especially tv shows.

You don't have any libraries near you?

Don't know about the person you replied to, but I don't. And (for the same reason, i.e. rural) my internet can't handle streaming and I don't get free-to-air TV. So I can either watch the downloadable content from streaming sites like Netflix - which I do, but it's not all downloadable - or I can buy DVDs, or I can pirate.

I live in a tiny town with a tiny library that, upon last visit, seemed to have reduced their stock by quite a lot. Their inter-library loan is very spotty.

So, you know - 'the library' isn't the solution for everyone.
