(Anonymous) 2020-08-27 02:45 am (UTC)(link)I was born in 96 and grew up enjoying some really well written fanfiction and quality works imo, but recently (the past few years) it feels kind of difficult finding people who aren't afraid to have fun. It comes across like they behave as if they were a celeb instead of a fan who has to be very careful about what they say or get mobbed on their social networks. They say the right things (the buzzwords, the "performative wokeness", and giving people lots of positive affirmations) but they don't come across as genuinely having a good time. The fandom's 'expectations' and 'standards' create anxiety and it colours the author's writing.
Also my fandom author friend told me once she deleted a few fics because the fandoms were so out of touch with reality (voltron for example) that she didn't feel they deserved them LOL.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-27 03:36 am (UTC)(link)As for the fic issues... So much of this 'you can't write anything without an angry mob putting your social on blast' is absolutely an author choice. You can be hella anonymous in fandom whilst still interacting with the people who read your stuff.
Back in the slightly older days of FF.net (I was born in 91 btw) people didn't have sprawling connections to their socials.
Writers didn't post their fic updates on accounts that had their photographs, life updates and other personal information all over them. Apart from an author's note telling you that the next chapter would be late because they were having a baby, we had little to no knowlege of these peoples lives.
And there was a lot less drama because of it.
If an angry mob showed up in your comment section, you just made a new username and kept on going. You can't get canceled if no-one knows your main account.
People who choose to link their fandom life to their irl social accounts for a bit more fandom adoration are braver than any US Marine... and just as intelligent.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-27 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)Additionally, there was no such thing as making a career out of social media, so people didn't have to worry about their "brand."
I don't see anything wrong with people making a living off of social media, nor do I see anything wrong with being "out" as a fannish geek, but I think still having an anonymous way of doing fandom that is disconnected from your offline life and/or means of income - if only on the side of everything you do non-anonymous - is going to allow you to have more fun.
