161. I don't think there's anything wrong with finding Klink adorable. Did you know Werner Klemperer, the guy who played Klink, was also Jewish?

161. (OP) Him, Schultz, and LeBeau. Which actually makes it /more/ wrong, because I doubt Mr. Klemperer wanted me to actually like Klink this much.

Yeah, I knew about Schultz and LeBeau, too. But, like, I don't know...I read a book detailing everyone's thoughts on their involvement with the show, and I don't recall Klemperer saying Klink wasn't an unsympathetic character (it's been ages since I've read it, though). I mean, his superior officers are way nastier than he is, right? In comparison, he's way more likable, and I'm pretty sure that's how it was supposed to be. Besides, if I'm remembering my history right, members of Germany's regular military weren't allowed to join any political parties, which would mean that technically he's not a Nazi.

What book would that be? I've only just gotten into the show and now I'm doing my scurryng-wanting-to-find-out-everything phase.

I suppose Klink wouldn't technically count as a Nazi. He's very patriotic, though.

It's called Hogan's Heroes: Behind the Scenes at Stalag 13, by Brenda Scott Royce. It's been ages since I've read it, but it's a really cool book that's very informative about everything related to the show, including the controversies surrounding it. You'd probably find it interesting.

And, yeahhh, that's definitely true.

Less wrong! Klemperer played him intentionally buffoonish! You were *supposed* to find him adorable and non-threatening. He only took the role after the producers/writers promised that he would never actually win against Hogan.

I saw an interview for an A&E Biography about Bob Crane (or maybe it was the E True Hollywood Story?) that talked extensively about it. While this might be somewhat suspect, given the sources, I'd feel less guilty about it. I'm Jewish, too, and I find Klink not only adorable, but rather empowering. After all, the Nazis failed so bad that Klemperer actually played Klink :)
