I like dubs--if they're done well. I do prefer subtitles, though. The only actor that truly gets on my nerves is JYB, but mostly because HE'S IN EVERY DAMN THING I PLAY/WATCH. I wish Crispin Freeman was in more stuff...his voice is so damn sexy. Also, major love to Yuri Lowenthal and Quinton Flynn. :)

You know, there are dub VAs who have been in more than what Johnny has been in...Steven Blum, Wendee Lee, etc., not to mention have been in the business far longer, but no one ever gets on their case for it. Just sayin'.

Oh yes...and the reason he's "in everything" is because he's good at what he does. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't keep getting work if producers thought he sucked. That and the VA talent pool overall is pretty small.

Point, but I think reason that the VAs you listed don't get ragged on is because they have different voices they can do besides the ones they are famous for.

Don't get me wrong; JYB is a fine VA, but every single character he plays sounds the same. Watching the dub of Geass drove me crazy because all I could hear when Lelouch opened his mouth was Ichigo and Ichigo sounds like Eiri in Petite Cosette who sounds like Renton in Eureka 7.

Of course, there are other VAs who suffer from the same repetitiveness (Greg Ayers comes to mind), but they don't get a pass from me either, so it's not just Johnny.

Thank you! His voice never changes so he always sounds the same. And yes, there are other VAs with the same problem, and they get on my nerves too. It doesn't mean they're bad, but when they're always around, it gets annoying.

Oh, another VA that comes to mind, now that I think about it, is Kirby Morrow. Dear lord did I LOL when I first heard him in Inuyasha because it made me think that all the Gundam Wing "Duo Maxwell gets raped by X animal" had come true and resulted in Koga.

To be fair, a lot of seiyuu sound the same no matter what their role is. Some of my favorites, especially.

I dunno, I thought his voice for Renton in Eureka Seven was quite different from what he usually does. Heck, I didn't even realise it was him until I saw the end credits!

I seriously thought for the longest time that Renten was played by Yuri Lowenthal. ._.

To be fair to Greg Ayres, he actually CAN do different voices (see: Nerima Daikon Brothers (Hideki), Negima! (Negi)), it's just since he's a really good actor that also happens to sound like a kid when he talks normally, he gets cast in roles that require a pretty similar voice. (AFAIK, there's not a huge amount of actors with that quality in the Texas area--although there's a few actresses that can pull off a fairly convincing boy.) And there's still variety in that "young boy" voice he does--Chrono doesn't quite sound like Satoshi Hiwatari, for example.

It's not really about who's been in the business longer, not to mention those VAs weren't in the secret. It's about me turning something on and yet again hearing JYB's voice. I never said he was bad at what he did, or that I hated him, or even that I didn't understand why he's been casted in just about everything I'm currently into--I realize that there aren't a whole lot of talented voice actors, I just get annoyed that I'm constantly hearing him.

Actually, the talent pool isn't that small...they just don't really make time to introduce new talent because everything's run on a tight schedule.

i have a pretty major love for JYB, but then again, i've been listening to him since i was a kid (Power Rangers anyone?). Plus he stars in my favorite anime of all time. (guess which one and you win a smiley.)

Wendee Lee and Steve Blum are 2 of my idols... and Greg Ayres really surprised the hell out of me in Nerima Daikon Brothers. (If you like Greg Ayres, Luci Christian, Chris Patton, or just Excel Saga, you should see that.)

oh, and i freakin' adore your icon btw. <3 Persona 4 has a damn good voice cast (Yosuke *loves* and Teddie. and speaking of them, Yuri was the MC in Persona 3, and Teddie's VA, Dave Wittenberg, was Yazoo in Advent Children, which starred Quinton Flynn :P yay being knowledgeable about English voice actors.)

Don't get me wrong, I like JYB, and I've also been a fan since his Power Ranger days. I just think a little diversity would be good. If he worked on changing his voice (if even only a little) I don't think I'd get so annoyed. Too much of a good thing, y'know? Especially when he's recently been voicing in both video games AND anime, so I'm hearing his voice in almost everything I'm currently into.

Wendee Lee and Steve Blum are great, too. I've not heard of the other VAs, but upon further inspection, that's mostly because I haven't really watched what they've been in. I may look into some of the things they've done though. Random note: I currently get really excited if I hear a voice that I don't recognize. I'm always on the look out for great new VAs.

Thanks! Yeah, I agree that P4's voice acting is superb. I don't have a problem with anyone's voices, and think Yuri and Dave did great jobs. Actually, when I hear Dave Wittenberg I think of Allen from Xenosaga--then again, I play video games more than I watch anime/movies...I didn't know he voiced Yazoo, though. :o Heh, wow, now I'm going to have to watch it again.
