139: liking one person of your gender does not instantly make you bi. I mean, I think most people have that situation at least once, and I don't think everyone in the world is bi. =P But I could be wrong.

I have a sort of fluctuating opinion on that. I've only really liked one woman but I've been in a monogomous relationship with her for almost 10 years, so I'd pretty much have to throw a gigantic fit if anyone challenged me abuot not being a "real" bisexual. On the other hand, having a crush on a fictional character or a celebrity, or anyone that you're not going to get to act on the crush regarding, seems more like a mental exercise, maybe testing the limits of your sexuality, without consequences.

To be honest, it actually annoys me more when people who are living a straight lifestyle identify themselves on the interwebs as being bisexual, especially if it's due to being attracted to a celebrity or fictional character. I'm bisexual, and I'm out in the world, trying to decide on a daily basis who to be out to, who I should not be out to, how to get health care coverage for my partner, the best way to do our taxes considering we can't file jointly, ETC, really living the life, the good and the bad, the mundane and the sexytimes, and for someone who has a crush on a pretty female celeb to say "ME TOO, I'M ALSO BI" kind of cheapens my experience. IMHO.

Thank you! And this is why I do not call myself bisexual. If at some point in the future I do get into a relationship with a woman, I may reassess whether I feel the label is applicable to me. But at the moment? It's so theoretical I would feel it was insulting to attempt to co-opt your experience and hold it up as some kind of badge ("Oooh! Oooh! Look at me! I'm special because I had a crush on a woman on TV one time!") when I haven't ever had to face any of the potential downsides.

Word. I know how you feel about the "living the life thing." Sure, I haven't been in a commited relationship with either a man or a woman that long, [I'm too young.] but I have dated men and women and dealt with the day to day stuff. It's not all sexy times or fun. Real relationships are hard work and having a less socially acceptable [to some people] sexuality isn't always easy.

It annoys me both ways. The people who deny that they're probably bi and the ones that claim it with no basis. >.<

Gah. Screw the kinsey scale and the sexuality duality and the spectrum of preference and all of that! You are who you are. Period. I just wish that everyone could accept that. You are no less of a person because of your preference.

Exactly why I don't call myself bisexual. Well put.
