See, that would be ideal. But at the same time... it helps to be able to talk about things, you know? Especially things that a lot of people seem not to know exist. And more categories seem to me to be closer to that ideal than fewer ones, even though that might sound counter-intuitive. Like how the more lines a regular two-dimensional shape consists of, the closer it is to being a circle.

I agree that labels and signs are sometimes necessary for communication, but to insist that everyone subscribe to the same set like the Kinsey scale is a bit difficult for me to swallow, since I do not see sexuality as being anything like a straight (no puns!) line. It's more like a pool, for me, which shifts and changes with tides. And what it's like for me is pretty much guaranteed to be different for everyone else, because sex is really such an individual thing.

That's also why I cringe at the idea of someone else saying to another "This is bisexual. You do THIS. You feel THIS way. Thus you are bisexual". Because who defines this? The Oxford English Dictionary? This funny man in a bow-tie who, while brilliant, was dead way before he could know me from Adam? According to different standards I could be labeled as bisexual, heterosexual, asexual. A 2, a 3, a 0?

In the case of sexuality, or at least for me, the insistence of labels limits the ability for communication or describing the truth, rather than working with it. For some people it works, but it doesn't for everyone.

I second this motion. Come on, guys. We've know that human sexuality didn't fit neatly into three categories since the forties.

Also, I think we need some sort of scale for the asexual-hypersexual spectrum. With an understanding that extremes on it are not unhealthy unless they get to the point where they interfere with everyday life. But that could just be me.

YES! An asexual-hypersexual scale would be very nice. In reality I think a three part scale would go a long way to improving the classification of sexualities.

Example, this is how I would classify myself: [all 7 point scales for simplicity]

asexual 0--|----6 hypersexual [2]

heterosexual 0--|----6 homosexual [2]

monogamous 0--|----6 polyamorous {2]

Thats the best scale I've come up with so far.

I'm not sure where I fall on the Kinsey scale! In fact, I have the same problem as the secret makers OP is complaining about. Occasionally I have crushes on women, but I have never acted on them, so I don't know if it's pure fantasy or something I would actually be interested in in real life. Occasionally I call myself a Kinsey 0.5 or a Kinsey 0.25, but I might actually be a Kinsey 0 or a Kinsey 1. I HAVE NO IDEA.
