101) Yeah, I did that, too, when I switched from FMA to Dr. Who. It's horribly disappointing, and a bit surprising considering the freaking set up. In fact, I couldn't sustain my interest in the fandom part of this fandom for very long. Still love the franchise to death, but honestly, as far as fandom goes they just seem so narrow and repetitive compared to what I was used to.

139) Yeah, sexuality isn't an on-off switch. More like a dimmer. Though to be honest, I think these guys are saying they'd only make an exception for one person. I tend to lump those guys with Het/Gay. I'd like people to be at least 25/75 before they don the "I'm bisexual" badge. The "does this one exception make me gay?" people really make me roll my eyes.

140) Hey, don't be putting down crappy self-insert fic. Write enough of that shit and you can learn how to write truly awesome self-insert fic, or perhaps crappy self-insert fic that millions of people will shell out 10 bucks a pop for (yeah, I'm looking at you S. Meyers.)

143) Wow, your friend is awfully entitled here. I hope you get up the guts to tell her that she's being annoying before you come to hate her guts.

149) Vampires are the most thinly veiled metaphor for sex ever.

157) I can see a movie convincing someone that they are bisexual, but not how one can convince them they aren't. Bisexual =/= asexual.

163) Ya know, blaming the server may be easier, but that doesn't excuse the fact that your friend dumped you in a rather assholish way. Good luck with finding someone to play with who is less of a prick.

167) You are kidding! Most fandoms are dominated by canon shippers. You want to feel lonely and weird, try being a rare pair shipper.

Maybe it's a, "If I'd go gay/straight for anyone in the world, it would probably be this character... and yet, I'm still not really feeling it" sort of thing? That's what I got out of it.

Could be!

143 OP

Sometimes I love her, sometimes I hate her. It varies =/ I probably need to learn to stand up for myself and just tell her, huh.

Yeah, because this kind of thing can poison your relationship. And when you snap, there's no going back.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-19 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
And I like it that way.

Ithink this is a "personal experiences" thing. Most fandoms I've encountered-or at least, the PARTS of the fandoms I've encountered-have been much more into fanon pairings than canon. Similarly, the first several years I was into anime and manga, I was firmly convinced that I was one of maybe 5 female fans who actually liked the female characters and wasn't into yaoi because slash and bashing the female characters was all I ever saw. It's not that it was the case, it was just that I was encountering certain parts of fandom primarily.

Re: 167

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
My first fandom didn't really have canon pairings. There were a few side het married couples, who were mostly roundly ignored because they were minor characters, but because of a large cast and the fact that the source material was adamently gen, there were buttloads of pairings, het, yaoi, yuri, threesomes, bizarre 5 way relationships, you name it. I thought that was the norm.

Then I ventured into other fandoms and found out that there was usually one or two pairings, usually canon, and that's all anyone wrote about. You'd think with a fandom like Torchwood, where everyone was canonically bisexual and in canon they all sleep around like someone's been lacing their drinks with aphrodesiacs that you'd be able to find fic in every flavor under the sun, but there is no femmeslash (despite hello, canon!) And very little of anything else except Jack/Ianto. I went into Avatar thinking, there were possibilities, and discovered yes there were, 75 percent of all fic was canon het pairings, and the other 25 was a het possibility that had been teased all series long. Yuri? Forget it. Yaoi? Almost none, and what little existed was mostly in the form of High School AUs. Lost fandom, you can choose between Kate/Sawyer (canon!pairing) and Kate/Jack (also canon.) Slayers? Lena/Gaurry (het and practically canon) or Amelia/Zelgadis (het practically canon) On and on.

Upshot, it turned out the only fandom I've ever been in where you could find decent fic and art of any pairing you could possibly think of was my first: FMA.

And see, most of my Avatar experience has been the adamant Zuko/Katara fans. (I like Suki/Sokka and suspect I'll like Mai/Zuko once I watch s2, but that's about it.)

Re: 167

Yeah, that's pretty good, if what you are looking for is het of the Hallmark Romance variety. But I don't read hallmark romances. It's one of the reasons I like rare pairs -- because they almost force the writer to think out of the typical romance cliches. They often demand that there be some kind of backstory or plot to justify them. Some drama or twist. So for me, the Avatar fandom was pretty empty of possibilities. I ended up enjoying some of the gen.

The Zuko/Katara thing has never made sense to me and has always struck me as "anything else would pair them up..."

I'm really not hugely into pairings. If I like the canon or implied canon pairings, great. But as long as they don't piss me off (which usually happens when I think the guy treats the girl-or other guy-badly) I'm fine. And if it really bothers me, I just find a canon that doesn't annoy me. (Too many canons to bother with any that piss me off.) But I've never been big on always having a pairing, and don't get invested in many.

Re: 167

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
I like the intimacy of pairings -- two people, vulnerable, yearning, interacting with each other on every level imaginable, physically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually. But I want them to be in some way fucked up. Abusive, either intentionally or not, or just fraught with baggage or scars or issues that have to be dealt with before there is even a possibility of a happily ever after.

What I'm looking for is the drama. The plot. The triumph of hope over fear, of desire over reason, inner strength over outer adversity. For some reason canon het fics almost never offer this.

Re: 167

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
I generally just demand that the canon itself give me what I want. Most pairing-centric fics I've read (canon or fanon) seem to have more idealized (for better or for worse) version of characters, or focus solely on the pairing aspect, and a lot of what interests me about the characters then tends to be missing. Half the time, I don't recognize the characters in fic.

Re: 167

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
There are a lot of shows I don't bother with the fandoms at all. I really only bother to read the fic and talk meta about fandoms where I am unsatisfied with canon, where they had a lot of possibilities that they didn't follow up on. Most of the time I'm just satisfied with what canon offers me.

And honestly, the idealistic romance-only stories tend to be so generic and interchangeable that there really isn't any point in reading them. Once you've read a couple, you might as well have read them all.
