I think what most people miss is that heterosexual and homosexual are used as absolute terms—as in, a person who identifies as either is implying they're only attracted to a single gender, which doesn't account for the inevitable flexibility of human sexuality. Bisexual is pretty much the catch-all place in the center for the who-knows-what-percentage of people who aren't quite at the far ends of the scale. But catch-all terms come with their own failings; in this case, a lack of shading. Implying either absolute or 50/50 (which is what our language does x.X) clearly doesn't work.

It's a language failing as much as a social failing. Bisexuality does have a lot of annoying baggage attached to it that I think makes people leery of identifying as less than 100% straight—my family has been claiming "it's just a phase" for damn near a decade now. *sigh* I can see people who lean one way or the other just saying straight/gay to avoid the wank, but I honestly don't think most of them even think that far. We're conditioned to think of it in the terms our language and society have identified, which I've already pointed out are cumbersome and lacking shading. Then we have the internalized homophobia that makes even thinking you might be less than straight awkward and uncomfortable. (Am I the only one that noticed there's a lot more "I'm straight but" secrets than "I'm gay but" secrets?) Top that with a big layer of general confusion about sexuality being fluid (or sexuality at all) and we have a mess.

tl;dr, we need better terminology.

Oh, and PS: Don't forget the problem of fantasy =/= action. *sigh* "Omg I had a wet dream about X I must be gay/bisexual/straight" is the same fallacy as "You read shouta you must be a pedophile!"

*seconds your novel about bisexuality* Both fascinating and frustrating, or I find it so.

Which is why I identify as queer. I'm attracted to women as a general rule, and one celebrity male that I doubt I would have sex with, if given the opportunity. I don't think that an attraction to one male makes me bisexual, but I don't know that I would be considered a lesbian by some either.

I'd rather not get into the limitations of those terms with most people, and so queer is the way I go.

Well, she's not perfect. But even that was done with an intention of goodness. Yeah, it bit her in the ass massively, but after it all she still believed that everyone deserved the chance to be saved.
