I'd love to hear about the cake recipe

Okay, so the base recipe is a good solid cake for decorating - eggs, equal weights butter, sugar, and self raising flour, a little vanilla essence, and a splash of milk. It's designed to scale up and down very neatly. I've fiddled with the recipe as given, and found that if I want to make a chocolate cake I just have to substitute cocoa powder for about 1/5th of the flour.
What I did yesterday was that, but I also added a very small amount of cinnamon, cloves, allspice and nutmeg. I'm planning a chocolate/caramel/spice cake for someone's birthday, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to overdo the spices. Happily, the quantities I used worked out very nicely! Enough that you could taste the spices, but not so much that they overwhelm. I tend to have a bit of a heavy hand with my flavours, so I'm glad I got it first try.

oooo, that sounds really good.
two other spices I love to put in cake are ginger and cardamom.
