129: I could not take that scene seriously. I'm actually shocked that anyone who identifies as submissive could, frankly-- because it was very clearly, to me, an attempt to dominate by a non-dominant person.

Chase's relationship with the masochist always struck me much more of a "she liked pain but she was also in charge", because of how Chase couldn't command the patient. Chase didn't strike the sub in that episode as dominant enough to respect/obey-- IMO because he /isn't dominant/. I could imagine his relationship with the masochist also being one where the girl was actively submissive, and he just sort of had to sit back and enjoy the ride, but he's so far from an active dominant that this secret actually made me laugh out loud.

TL;DR: That scene was basically the anti-hot for me. People who aren't Dom but pretending to me is a huge turn off.

Frankly, i saw it quite differently. i've known people who refuse to respond submissively to anyone who isn't /their/ Dom/me, and it seemed to me that Harvey didn't respond that way to anyone but Annette...because she was /his Mistress/, and Chase had no part in their relationship (other than being Harvey's doctor). *shrug*

Maybe it's just me. And i'll admit, i'm still not as knowledgeable about the lifestyle as i'd like to be. But i think Chase is more dominant than he lets on (and he becomes more confident and commanding in later seasons, once he's out from House's shadow... and that just wins).

We don't have enough on their relationship to speculate that with actual basis, though. You can read into it what you will: but nothing like that is ever stated or implied in the episode, and it would be strange if it were, because it's not a "case study of a BDSM relationship" sort of episode, especially because most people watching it wouldn't know enough about the lifestyle to know what that sort of thing meant.

Chase grows as a character: but that doesn't show "hidden dominance" or anything like that. It shows character growth. The whole show isn't an exploration of Chase's sexuality. This particular episode, like episodes later on, give us glimpses of his personal life and relationships, but his CHARACTER GROWTH isn't meant to be a reflection on his sexual habits: it's just supposed to be character growth.

NOT SO MUCH. I can't find your response to my comment, but I'm so tired of people saying "Chase is a sub" because he couldn't dominate a patient (not ethical) who was someone ELSE's sub and only wanted HER, whom he had no real DESIRE to dominate.

I think also that a lot of the "Chase is a sub" crap comes from people who think that Chase is too pretty to top. I'm sorry, being pretty does not make you a bloody uke.

Chase is very dominant in many of his interactions, but you can't dominate someone who specifically does not want to submit to you, particularly if you're not into them either and you're in the wrong setting. He didn't show himself as innately subby there, he showed himself (as he so often does) as being more ethical than he pretends he is.

Nobody who doesn't like dominating people gets that good at hypnotic control without frequent practise (which he doesn't get at work). "Wilson is done talking now." Not the words of someone who doesn't know how to be large and in charge when it's the right place and time for it.

Why in the world would you judge someone as definitively NOT A DOMINANT when:

1) the person they had to dominate wasn't someone they would ever have chosen to dominate?

2) the person they had to dominate was SOMEONE ELSE's sub?

3) the person they had to dominate was someone they knew it wasn't ethical for them to dominate?

4) they had to dominate someone of the same sex when their sexual preferences are clearly heterosexual generally?
