165. I would say write it. It's your story, you're in ultimate control. However, personally, I prefer endings that are somewhat open-ended. Say they get in a relationship, end the story with them in that relationship. I don't think it's absolutely necessary to do any kind of 'twenty years later they're more in love than ever!!!' that authors seem so hooked on. If you leave it open, you will leave them in a place you like, where they'll end up together, and the readers still have the opportunity to make their own personal ending in fanfic and fanart.

Obviously you have the ultimate say, but the heavy-handedness of authors like JKR and Smeyer, where they say 'there is absolutely no alternative' seems kind of overdoing it for me. Especially when they go so far as to call fans delusional, or to give absolutes for every significant or fan-loved character in the story the way JKR does. It's fine to 'know' the truth, but I think that it's just a little... kinder, I guess, to let the fans think up things for themselves.

The author gives the story, and yes they 'have a right to know what they know' about the characters, the way JKR said. But I don't think they really have the right to get angry at people who disagree or don't like the pairings. Putting it out there for the public to read means you give part of the control to the readers - you can only control what you write, the readers control how they interpret it. Which, unfortunately for very controlling writers, can easily be the complete opposite of what you as a writer envision for the characters. But there's no sense in trying to take that part of the writing - the imagination of the reader - away from the fans, I don't think. It's impossible, first of all... people will still ship what they ship, and it's also unpleasant for the fandom, because fans are annoyed by that kind of antagonism. So I guess what I'm really saying isn't that you shouldn't put them together, but that you should accept that people might ship other things regardless of what canon says.
