107. THERE IS SOMEONE ELSE IN THE WORLD WHO DOES THIS. *GLEE* I was so, so disappointed when Virgil left the story. The Inferno is one of my favourite books because of the interactions between those two. I don't even NECESSARILY ship them romantically -- they just have such spectacularly funny and touching chemistry between them. I read it for the first time when I was 17, and the thing that really struck me was just how much alike they are, as friends, to people today. Their clothes may be weird and their words may be different and culture and social status and all that are unusual these days... but as friends, they're timeless. The way they screw around and their physical closeness and emotional intimacy is just... familiar. It's fascinating just to see how timeless humans are in that respect.

Hi! I'm the 107 and 135 poster. And very happy that other folks besides me love the Dante/Virgil friendship. I remember being very angry at Beatrice when she bitch-slaps Dante near the end of Purgatorio, as he's grieving for Virgil's sudden disappearance...*grrr...*
