Execution is everything. You can write the most saccharine ending but if you write like you're possessed by Shakespeare's talent no one will be bothered by it.

But even if you aren't, you can get away with your characters getting engaged. Just show in some way that everything comes at a price and leave in a little bit of ambiguity and doubt about the "happy" part of the ending. Life isn't neat and it does not come with happy endings, it just has very happy moments sometimes. If you show that your happy ending is a happy moment and not a perpetual happily ever after, you should be fine in the realism department.

This is perhaps the difference between a good happy ending and a bad one - the implication that life will always be this happy. I think Rowling and Meyer both failed in this regard by implying that it does, which does not compute with the way we know the world works.

You can have a happy ending.
