What about humans as pets to monsters?

I love the idea of friendly companionship between humans and intelligent monsters, or even a human being a loyal servant of an intelligent monster. But it's a slightly different situation when both the human and the monster are intelligent, and I would feel kinda grody about a dynamic where the human is treated as a pet and not a companion.
