Random question from someone who knows nothing about this - if that's the case, does the Japanese model work in Japan? If it does work in Japan, what makes Japan and NA different?

It's not two different models, sorry it's not really clear from the secret if you don't already know about the games. So basically there are two separate servers in this case, Japanese and NA, and they were released at different times. FGO NA is exactly two years behind Japan in terms of content, I believe Magia Record was about the same at the time the english version of the app was released. FGO NA is just following Japan almost exactly (bar a couple banner changes and the occasional event moved around because the two servers also have different anniversary dates), so it is and presumably always will be two years behind the main Japanese server. MagiReco NA dealt with this by basically going at warp speed in order to catch up to Japan -- constant events with no breaks in between to the point that most new players didn't have a hope of completing them due to limited stamina points, gacha banners one after another often out of order so even if you wanted to save for a particular banner there was no real way to do so because it could come at any time. While there's admittedly no way to say for sure all evidence points to this pace causing MagiReco NA to shed players pretty badly, as only the very dedicated and the whales could really keep up while almost everyone else got burned out and quit.

Ah, thank you, that makes sense!

What are whales in this context?

Whales is common gacha speak (I think it may have originated in gambling actually, which makes sense) meaning ‘big spenders,’ basically. The people who spend thousands a month on their favorite game trying to get the best waifus. These are often the people helping most to keep games afloat — there’s actually a rumor that 5 MagiReco players accounted for 50% of the game’s revenue. Problem is, many failed games have shown that you can’t survive just on whales.
