Re: Related to #6 - Do you believe in cultural appropriation?

I think it's a legitimate concept, but what cultural appropriation means to one person may not mean the same thing to another and I have trouble navigating those waters. When Coco came out, my coworker was enchanted by the fact that there's a whole holiday where you celebrate your deceased loved ones. I'm Mexican and she asked me if it would be bad if a white person celebrated Dia de los Muertos. I told her I didn't think it would be a bad thing and shared with her some of the things that my family did. It was nice to share something from my culture and I felt that she was being sincere in wanting to respectfully celebrate the holiday, but one of my coworkers (who is also Mexican) wasn't very comfortable with the idea of a white person celebrating Dia de los Muertos just because they'd seen a Disney movie that also had some controversy relating to cultural appropriation.

In this case, I would say your Mexican coworker is in the wrong.

The coworker who approached you about The Day Of The Dead did so in respect of the beliefs they saw after watching Coco. They approached you in the effort to better understand the occasion. They went so far as to ask/get your blessing on the subject- Wether or not they should be disincluded from celebrating, if only due to their race.
But just as you replied, the answer is yes.

Be it they became enchanted from a cultured friend, interactions with the culture itself, or even a movie whose plot includes just that; so long as they are treating the occasion with the respect it deserves, race is not an issue.
When it comes to belief, the willingness to believe, and the want to learn- there is nothing close to appropriation there.

By preventing those who want and learn to take part in a culture if only because of their race or where they learned of such cultural facts, is simply bitterly resorting back to plain racism and the reluctance to allow their culture to flourish.
