there is no shifting of cultural ideas from one culture to another that is not appropriation. that is what appropriation is, and it happens both frequently and naturally. the problem occurs when cultures attempt to gain dominance by means of erasure, coopting, AND/OR forced assimilation (which is also appropriation).

it's like everyone understands "the romans gained power by coopting the cultures of the lands they occupied and the refusal to be coopted brought persecution by the romans to the many occupied cultures" and people mostly understand "christianity destroyed many pagan religions with coopting, erasure, forced assimilation and persecution," the first and third being key forms of cultural appropriation but when we talk about modern ideas of this suddenly everyone is mariahcareyican'tread.gif
