Off the top of my head: Diana Gabaldon, George R.R. Martin, Robin McKinley... I'm sure there are more, though.

Robin McKinley

Well damn, I just had the overwhelming need to read a fanfic where someone actually finishes the story she started in Sunshine.

George RR Martin writes fanfic of British mediaeval history and Shakespeare. When I came across his description of a character going to a blacksmith to get his tournament helm hammered off his head I sat bolt upright and shouted, "You ripped that off from the life of William Marshal!"

Damn. I had no idea! I wonder how Diana and George feel about their books being adapted to live action, or if the money they get in the bank from those adaptions is enough to satisfy the immoral double standard they seem to have on other people taking liberties with their creations.

I'll consider myself lucky to have never been a fan of the works of any of these people. (though a part of me wonders if Martin doesn't want fanfic being writ if only because he cant stand the idea that someone else wrote the next book both better and more coherent than anything he could hope to imagine)
