fanfiction.net had a list in the old days.

I haven't logged into that for at least 3 years now (i mass dumped a fic and fled in the night like a wild banshee)

Some of it is people like GRRM who view their characters as their children and fanfic writers making it like incest. (I'm paraphrasing, I think.) Anne Rice was in this category. (Considering what she wrote, ironic.)Anne McCaffery too. (Oh, funsies. All the hidden Pern fanfic. Woot.)

And then there was the category of the "there was a court case where an author got sued by a fanfic writer..." leaving out the author actually err ran a 'zine for related works, and the book was in bed to publish before she read the fanfic and it got tossed out pretty much. A whole bunch of authors got scared and went nuclear for a bit. "no fanfic."

Some of those writers (including Anne Rice) eventually relented as they realized it was just fear mongering. McCaffery then had RULES for a while. Now she's gone, so I'm not sure what the estate has decreed. I'm not sure fandom cares.

It gets crazy.

Really? Like hot damn is that wrong. I'm actually getting mad now tbph..

Paraphrasing or not, that's pure bullshit. While I do not follow GoT I'm fairly certain he includes plenty of incestuous action in his novels like the failed camfilmed porn pretender he is.
Not only that but why should fanfic be forbidden when he's more than happy selling out for a live action series he knows he wont write and they must manufacture an end for. (aka Fanfiction)
Just because it doesn't put a penny in his pocket directly doesn't mean fanfic isn't advertisement enough to fill them anyways. Hell, and after writing nothing for how many years, can he really call his creations his children after neglecting them for so long, let alone criticize the only people invested enough to write possible futures for a book series that is highly doubtful to be completed.

From what I've found in a quick search about Anne McCaffery, I do sort of agree with her set of 'rules' (for the most part) that she set out. (but as you noted that was only after and by all means is still incredibly strange) Mainly in the opinion that, by all means, fanworks should be and most definitely continue to be a free market. The bit about intimate relations is strange, but then again all I did was a quick search and know nothing of the fandom nor author aside from that;;


The whole court fiasco pisses me off to no end. I know little to nothing about them, and I fear to even look it up. Like I've been re-reading comics back to their origins recently. In the published comics they had fan letters they would post and usually reply to in each book. In the early years they had a number of instances where they published the letters from fanzine creators and fanclubs. Guy Gardiner is created in honour of one loyal fan who shares the same name.
The fact that greed steals away the interaction between fan and creator is completely ridiculous!

Ugh! For the life of me I don't think Ill ever understand it!
