109: OH GOD Thank fucking god someone said it. So many of my best friends are so smitten with this man and with this fandom and I don't know how to talk to them about it (hence me even going anon to make this comment). So I feel gratified in more ways than you can possibly imagine that somebody else "WTF?"s at the Rahm fangirling, not because it's EW RPF or because we should have respect for politicians or some shit, but because blindly fangirling a man with his politics is deeply, deeply frightening. As fun a pairing as Rahm/Obama is, as hot-cold sexy they are together, as enjoyable and welcoming the fandom is, I can never, ever like it because the way they worship Rahm like the second coming actually kind of. Offends me. :|

110: To be honest, it makes me sad that your internet experience is either so lonely or so lame that a place as shitty and worthless as 4chan seems special in any way by comparison! My heart breaks for you.

Ok, like, I can understand enjoying 4chan if you're looking for a steady source of fanart and constant discussion of series you're into, but it takes a huge amount of white privilege to be able to sit around there and brush off how virulently racist they are to find said fanart or participate in said constant discussions. And no, the excuse that they're "just trolling" doesn't cut it, because the fact that they CAN find their constant hatefulness so ~harmless~ is a brazen act of white privilege itself, plain and simple. Not to mention how eager they are to racist troll any remotely dark character that shows up in a series, not to mention how defensive they get if serious discussions about race ever arise - it's sad yet hilarious to me the way they try to pretend that trolling with extreme racism can protect them from the fail of the less extreme but still hateful stuff they really believe. And don't even get me started on the deep-rooted misogyny. I don't mean the playful insistence on calling girls sluts and fapping to lolis - I mean the defensiveness that arises when you call them on this, the bitterness they have towards women that is evident in all the ronery threads, the way they can't get into a series unless it's a) filled with testosterone b) filled with sexualizable non-threatening female children or c) they can pretend the women have roles subsumed beneath the men (random example: the way they didn't get into Claymore, a series filled to the brim with strong women characters, till Raki - the weak and useless solitary male character - bulked up. And now they like to pretend he's the most important character. what).

tl;dr 4chan is a lot of fun if you can ignore the offensiveness, but being able to ignore the offensiveness for the fun is in and of itself offensive to me. And assuming there are no places on the internet equally as fun but not quite so enforcedly stupid and offensive is just lazy imo.

I was definitely expecting WHY SO SERIOUS? type responses to that one, so ilu2! It's encouraging to find other people who don't buy the "we're just trollin so it's all fun and games" BS. :)

After reading back on this post a little, a quick addendum to 109: What makes me uncomfortable is not Rahm himself, or liking Rahm, or finding him appealing, but the fanwanking that occurs to prove that everything he's done is for noble, uniting reasons, that he's secretly the leftist of the left, etc. I'm used to character apologism going on in my fandoms, and I actually find it sort of endearing to a point, but when it's a real person this is happening to, when the refusal to view a character objectively is in relation to a policy-maker who affects world affairs, well, it's a lot harder to just enjoy the output of fannish energy that goes into defending every last one of his actions.

Anyone who thinks that Rahm is a leftist is a moron anyways.

I've seen arguments that he behaves in centrist ways to ~*~unite~*~ the parties and make pushing the leftist agenda more feasible. (It's a fanwank based on his loyal nature, this idea he does the hotheaded things he does to make the world of US politics more maneuverable for open leftists like Obama or Clinton. Which is really a very cute sort of meta to stick into fic of yours, but the fact that people REALLY BELIEVE THIS IN REALITY frightens me terribly.)

And, just, yeah. The fact that he poured loads of his pocket money into filling the senate with moderate Democrats and voted for the PATRIOT ACT makes it really, really tough for me to see this.

I'm calling troll because otherwise you're just too stupid to live. Unbelievable.

That said, I'm pretty grossed out by the anti-Arab stuff I'm seeing in response. Fighting one hateful prejudice with another - real classy, y'all!

I've never visited 4chan in my life (didn't even know what it was until a couple of years ago) and I'm so glad I haven't. I was almost curious to go look until I heard it was full of racists.

I figure the good art and the fun memes will make their way elsewhere and all the shit can stay there.

Mmm, every piece of fanart has a source link, after all! There are ways to get to it without 4chan as the totally offensive middleman.

Well, damn. I didn't expect anyone to break out the wall of text over my secret. I feel oddly honored.

No, there's no justifying that place. I'm not going to try either. I'm actually at quite a loss on how to reply to your comment. Building a rebuttal or agreement for this sort of quasi-debate thing usually involves some kind of moral or principle as a foundation, but being that our object of discussion is 4chan... yeah, I kept breaking into snickers mid-typing. Screw it, I give up.

I suppose I'm just going to say that it is possible for people to know and understand the many oh-so-horrible acts that occur daily on that place, and still like it for various reasons. Of course, you won't ever find me vouching for the goodness of said people's souls either, but then again I already gave up mine as lost.
