Advice needed on finishing a WIP

(Anonymous) 2020-09-13 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I have writers block. Major writers block. My evening writing sessions have dwindled to two half-sentences. I think it's because I'm sick atm and have a lot of RL stress and worry going on.

Normally I'd just take a break but today I got my first 'please finish this' comment on a WIP I (stupidly) started posting 2 months ago.

Anyone got any advice on how to break this???

It seems counter-intuitive, but you might want to just give yourself a break on this one. Take some time for self-care since you're sick and stressed out - those aren't great conditions for creativity for most people. If you really feel itchy to write, try writing something else that's not your WIP first. Not anything important, just a writing exercise or something fun where you have no skin in the game whether or not you finish it or it's amazing. Sometimes when there's no pressure (such as well-meaning "please finish this" comments), it'll help you get your groove back.

When I need to write I watch shippy videos or listen to music that fits their relationship in the fic. Sometimes I go back and watch the best episodes or read the best scenes from the source material.

Don't stress about it, just try to find what inspired you in the first place?

Honestly, it sounds like a break is a good idea right now. Real life health and stress aren't nothing.

If you put an On Hiatus tag on your wips, or add an author's note, that can take some of the stress off the "please post some more" commenters, and if they continue they're being arseholes and you can respond accordingly.

If you do want to keep writing, keep your goals small and super-achievable. Short one-shots. Side-stories to your wip. Or crack-fic. Just, things that are fun. And. writing a paragraph a day is still writing. It's still achieving things.

And take care of yourself, nonny. Okay?

The coffee I had today was so good that I'm now writing porn about it; Character A is enjoying said drink, his tongue working the rim of that bottle with dangerous enthusiasm.

Hey, if it inspires, it inspires.

I've been writing crack!Porn for my fandom for fun and been having a great time - but after reading a handful of comments wanting a sequel to one particular crack fic I wrote, I got inspired and wrote the longest fic I have ever written in one sitting. Unfortunately I've somehow made it more serious than I had meant to with making a character angst/worry over having a kink awoken in him from him, but not wanting to tell the character he fucked in the first fic. It's almost done with a lot of sex that I intend to make weird, but I highly doubt that this is the sequel those commenters wanted lol :'D

Personally I would be stoked if someone wrote a longer and more indepth sequel to a one off fic I loved!

I didn't get to play Numenera today because my internet decided today was the day to be awful so I am writing angst.
My character is just about to realise that he is not going to live to see another day.
I am also looking up how fast Crush syndrome can kill. Not that that knowledge can help him.

I have this weird vague desire to write a crossover between the Amazon series 'The Boys' and the webnovel 'Worm', even though I've never watched the first and only read part of the second. IDK, I just feel like, even though they're both gritty grimdark 'what if superheroes were dickheads' gorefests, I think the cast of Worm would look at the setting of The Boys and be like... 'wow, you're even more fucked up than us, and you don't even have godzilla fucking your shit up'.

I would say go for it!

Write what comes out, and if you're inclined, check with the wiki to make sure you keep things coherent unless you don't want to and just tag as AU. That's what I tend to do with any fic I haven't fully consumed the media for. Granted, I tend not to post it, but I do mark it AU for myself, because knowing it's not following the actual canon doesn't sit entirely right with me (save some concessions I may allow lol)

Hmmm... well, I do love me some drawer fic. If nothing else I can just get it down in dotpoints so I can stop thinking about it.
Hey, thanks for giving me permission, random anon! I know that might sound sarcastic, but I'm really anxious, and sometimes just knowing there's a person out there approving of my actions makes me feel better.

I've only done one so far but it was helpful. I figured I'd post the link here for anyone else who might be looking for something to do.
