(Anonymous) 2020-09-14 02:01 am (UTC)(link)One comment I really loved from a Chinese-American woman was that by making her 'cool from birth' Mulan instead of 'works hard to get good' Mulan, they made her way less interesting and sympathetic to a Chinese audience - that East Asian media has a strong tendency towards protagonists who have to put in a lot of time and effort to become great, which I realised really meshed with my knowledge of shounen manga.
