Disney's live action Mulan is getting pretty lukewarm reviews in China, and it's getting kind of hammered by Chinese-Americans. Turns out when you have a movie with an entirely Chinese cast and an entirely non-Chinese crew, you end up with a lot of uncomfortable orientalist undertones.
Also, a four person writing crew who never bothered to look up 'chi'.

I love that there's a completely different live action version of Mulan released earlier this year on Youtube, being passed around via link on Twitter. I haven't sat down to watch it, and I'm told the translation isn't great, but word is that it's better than Disney's (live action remake).

And even if it wasn't, I'm sure as hell not paying 30 bucks to rent a movie on a streaming service one already pays for.

Here's an old fannish review of the Chinese Mulan movie, if you're interested:

Interesting. Though I'd heard of the one released in '09, going by the screenshots, it's possibly a different movie from the one on youtube. I'll have to take a closer look today.

Wait, I thought the whole point of taking out Mushu and the songs was to make it more like the original ballad. Did they not have any advisors on Chinese culture or anything like that who would’ve been able to sniff out any bad undertones?

The director says they did, but she didn't say if she actually listened to them...
One comment I really loved from a Chinese-American woman was that by making her 'cool from birth' Mulan instead of 'works hard to get good' Mulan, they made her way less interesting and sympathetic to a Chinese audience - that East Asian media has a strong tendency towards protagonists who have to put in a lot of time and effort to become great, which I realised really meshed with my knowledge of shounen manga.
