Typing Systems

F!Sers, are you into typing systems like The MBTI and/or the Enneagram? Do you feel they work for you and offer you valuable insights, or do they not do anything for you? What do you type as? Do you agree with the type you are given when you take the test(s)?

I think that things like MBTI and Enneagram are measuring something real. I think there are different personality types that are stable collections of personality traits and ways of looking at the world. But MBTI, ennegream, etc are only measuring a handful of the personality traits that exist, and they're measuring them in a totally unscientific way.

Still fun to play around wiht though.

I took the MB and I was amazed at how closely the personality type fit me.

BUT I have reservations because I got a personality type I was quite chuffed with and I wonder how much of my resonance with it was just me wanting to fit it.

SA My MB type was The Architect btw. Can't remember the letters for it. It explained so much about my life and how I think.

I’m really into the enneagram, though in the end it’s obviously still largely an arbitrary set of guideline for making sense of disparate personality elements. It’s not based on some great, universal, objective and unchanging truth or anything like that.

I’ve never had much interest in the MBTI, though. For me it’s just that the ennegram is stunningly spot-on and has given me all sorts of helpful insights over the years. Like, it literally helped me understand my relationship with my mother better so that I was able to patch over some of our rockier areas. Whereas the MBTI just hasn’t ever done anything for me. I don’t feel accurately represented by the types, and it’s never offered me any insights on myself or my relationship with others.

For the enneagram I type as a 5w6 and I agree with that typing very much (though over the years I’ve developed a lot more 1 and 9 qualities as well).

For the MBTI I tend to type as an ISTJ or even an ESTJ, but the descriptions don’t much sound like me. The closest matches I can find are the INTJ and the INTP, which are roughly accurate, but not impressively accurate. Just like, 'yeah, sure, that sounds about like me.'

Here's my fave enneagram test, if anybody feels like getting typed

I am deeply philosophically opposed to the MBTI, mostly because it was created by a couple of ladies' magazine columnists who just so happened to enormously racist.
I love Buzzfeed quizzes and that, all that 'If You Were a Northern American Waterfowl, What Would You Be?' type nonsense - I'll take any opportunity to find out what sort of Keat's odes I am, or what type of literary melancholy. But those are for fun, and everyone recognises they're for fun. No one is pretending there's any science going on. And no one is trying to charge you a thousand dollars to tell whether you belong to Erudite or Dauntless.

Yeah, I tend to love typing systems, but I don’t think they should be used in an institutionalized manner (like in work-places or whathaveyou). I think even if they are accurate (which they often aren’t), they’re far more likely to be used in a negative and kind of prejudicial way than to be used in a way that genuinely improves the workplace.

For individual, personal use though, I have no problem with them, unless someone gets really massively over-zealous and dogmatic about them.

Enneagram sounds like a load of crap to me.

I love the MBTI. I've taken the full test at various times in my life and always gotten the same type and feel like it represents my personality well. It gives me a sense of comfort and pride in my strengths and a reminder of my weaknesses.

The enneagram works for me, the mbti doesn't. I like the conceptual basis for the enneagram of determining what is most threatening to one's sense of self and what one perceives as most valuable to their sense of self, and then extrapolating out from there. That makes sense to me. The this-or-that dualities of the mbti don't track for me and dont fit my own personality at all so it's a bust.

Realistically, neither system has any significant basis in actual science.

Little better than astrology.

Re: Typing Systems

I think there’s a pretty huge difference between claiming, “This system uses points A, B, and C of your personality to extrapolate points X, Y, and Z of your personality,” and claiming, “This system uses the location of the celestial bodies at the time or your birth to determine points A through Z of your personality (and also maybe predict some random shit that’s going to happen to you).”

Neither the enneagram nor the MBTI are scientifically sound, and nobody should apply them as if they were. But there’s still about a thousand miles between them and astrology, imo.

nayrt, but ime the one is just about as "accurate" as the other, and I've taken both the enneagram test and the MBTI one, multiple times each. fun fact, I did not always come up with the same results, and sometimes I came up with pretty oppositional ones to ones I had previouslt gotten, despite the fact that I tried to be as truthful as possible. hmm. ever so much more accurate than astrology, which, to be clear, I also do not put any stock in whatsoever. as far as I'm concerned typing tests are basically just astrology for people who think they're too smart to believe in astrology. To be fair I would probably be less cynical about them if the people who believe in them weren't so gd deadly serious and arrogant about it, like the stupid tests are some kind of Super Defining Scientific cult shit.

i like em when i have time to mess w em. i find some accuracy in them. and i feel like you kind of get something out of it just by reflecting~

also this is corny as hell but just the other day my friends and i got all nostalgic about homestuck and two of em are rly into classpects, which is like hero titles for characters in-comic and stuff that a lot of fandom spent time figuring out how to categorize themselves into. one way is using the enneagram test to find your class and another personality test to find your class. anyway! i got prince of time which is cool as hell and also kind dangerously powerful 😎 and that's the most fun i've had w personality tests in a while ahahaha
