As an American who lives in the UK (my wife is English) I really do get your anxiety about being the dumb American, but you have to let yourself breathe! People are generally willing to cut you slack if you've put in effort and it sounds like you've done that and more. There are always going to be assholes out there who will care about every little thing but from your secret it sounds like you're going above and beyond.
