(Anonymous) 2020-09-18 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)But the logical conclusion of this argument seems to be that capitalism is evil, therefore you should just be evil at all times and not worry about it. Because the same objection could be raised to any possible ethical line you draw in a broadly unjust society.
There's also the ethical vs artistic issue: so much of what society deems of high merit and quality, was in fact created and built by 'bad' people.
I don't think that this dilemma is relevant to the context of talking about JKR, because the objection being made is not that JKR's conduct is morally suspect (although it is). The objection is that JKR's political speech is harmful. So it's a different standard.
I do think there's a complex argument about how we should regard art made in the past by people who were morally bad, and I don't think we should dismiss all such art out of hands by any means. But that's not really what's going on when people talk about boycotting JKR.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-19 09:09 am (UTC)(link)More the opposite - try to do as little evil as you can, realise that the system is the issue rather than your individual choices and work against that. Don't virtue signal via consumerism and don't slag off other people's different choices.
