Ameripicking question

(Anonymous) 2020-09-18 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
For a fandom set in the future, with American born characters, but that is not actually set in America - how much Ameripicking would you expect?

I've been very careful with the dialogue but I think my narrative voice probably has quite a few Britishisms.

In that situation I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Hard to say. Unless the American characters grew up elsewhere, I'd still expect their speech and thoughts to sound American. Everything else depends on the setting and other circumstances.

I think you're probably fine with most things (an example would be great tho).
Certain things like saying "proper" or "mum" wouldn't quite fit, or certain slang or whatever the youths say these days (or back then) may also be odd...or like the way "fit" is used to mean good looking, whereas Americans tend to use it to mean in shape (not necessarily in the face). But I only know those words because of exposure to UK media. Which if it's set in the future, and these American born folks are raised or grow up with a cadre of other internationals, then maybe they pick up some of the inflection or vocabulary of the people they're around -- be they from Singapore or Belize.
