I'm probably more guilty of writing men based on who I'd like to BE.

Same. To be honest, I have a much stronger desire to be "respectful" of female characters, generally. I tend to feel almost protective of them. I just want to let them be themselves and not impose on them. Whereas with male characters I tend to let my Id factor into things more.
