I will die on the hill that Henry VIII is a garbage king and people in the UK, especially England are only obsessed with him because of his wives. He was the same as any weak-ass man led by his dick and couldn't handle the fact that maybe he was an unattractive fat mess (and maybe the lack of living kids/sons was mostly down to his powdery sperm) so used his social position of power to lord it over those in a weaker position, such as his wives. Without my history hat on, I'm not even gonna allow "those were the times" in this instance because fuck Henry VIII. I'm glad his most successful heir was a woman.

The fact she apparently faced her execution with such relative composure has always made me feel that the world doesn't deserve to judge women like Catherine Howard.

Haha well, once we're allowed to travel longer distances again without feeling bad! Although I feel a bit like he did already kinda get what he deserved by not getting the grand tomb he planned and being "lost" for a few years? Either way fuck him still.

This is not an unusual opinion in England? His wives were mostly awesome, he was garbage, the sky is blue.

I think in general circles you're right. But in academic circles (in my experience) there's a certain demographic unwilling to let go of their overall Tudor worship, including accepting that Henry VIII is a shit and not worth any of our attention but his wives are more interesting.

As someone who went to school in the UK, my main memory of learning anything to do with Henry VIII was mostly focused on why he started the Church of England and a very summarized version of who his wives were.
Even though a lot of people agree that he was shit, but I get sad sometimes at how much they left out when teaching those things in school (I strongly suspect that it's to do with focusing on the 'religion' side of it, but that could just be how my school was and speculation on my part).

I think this post pretty much sums up everything perfectly :D. Well said.

Another Brit here chiming in that I hate that overgorwn manchild and his murderous tantrums more every time I learn something new about him. The only good thing that ever came out of him was his daughter, and I'm inclined to believe that was mostly Anne anyway.
