(Anonymous) 2020-09-20 02:17 am (UTC)(link)I mainly brought up that I was ace because OP is ace and I wanted to represent as a fellow ace in the thread. You’re right to point out that allo people can have these exact same preferences.
I kind of implied that my fic preferences are what they are because I’m ace, and honestly I don’t actually know if that’s right or wrong. I DO tend to think my lack of interest in multi-shipping and character group sex and pure PWP is closely related to my low sex drive. Like, I imagine that if my sex drive were higher, those things would turn me on purely by virtue of the fact that they are sexy sexy sex things and my sex drive was right there and easy to rev up, so to speak.
Whereas, because my sex drive is low, it takes a far more specific and concerted approach to get my engine running. If the approach isn’t just right, it’s not getting me anywhere.
However, plenty of allo people have low sex drives. My low sex drive doesn’t necessarily have any relation to my asexuality.
I do find it interesting, though, that you say you’re a “total horndog” and yet you still aren’t into a lot of those same things I’m not into. I would have assumed (wrongly) that, as a “total horndog” you would’ve enjoyed those things purely by virtue of the fact that they are sexy sexy sex things. It often feels like a lot of people in fandom can get horny for anything sexy at the drop of a hat. Maybe a lot of people can. But I will remember to keep in mind that “high sex drive” does not automatically equal “horny for anything sexy.”
It’s one of those things that I’m sure is very obvious from your lived experience of being both horny and quite specific about what does it for you. But from the perspective of someone who usually sits at around a 1 out of 10 on the horniness scale, it’s hard to know what it’s like to be a 6 or an 8. I had a day or two a month of hitting maybe a 5 on the scale, back before I went on birth control, and to be honest, I DID find that things turned me on at 5 that never would’ve even blipped my radar at 1. So that’s what I’ basing my assumption off of, when I assume I’d be into a lot more stuff if my sex drive were higher.

Furthermore, a lot of PWP is lazy. I might be horny, but I've got some standards. The equivalent of a 3rd rate amateur porno isn't going to cut it.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-20 05:19 am (UTC)(link)So like, I do think that when you have a roaring libido, more things can probably turn your crank. But clearly that doesn't mean anything will.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-20 03:48 am (UTC)(link)They're not inherently sexy things, though. They're only sexy if that's what you're into, and if they're not, they're going to be a turn-off whether you're a 1 or a 10 on the horniness scale. A lot of people who are loudly horny in that fandom have kinks and general preferences that line up very closely with the things that are popular in fandom, so it's not that they can get horny for anything at the drop of a hat (though I'm sure a few of them can) as it is that their specific needs are likely to be served by anything fandom offers up.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-20 05:03 am (UTC)(link)But like I said, on the rare occasions that my sex drive gets above a 3, I find that things I'm usually totally indifferent to suddenly turn me on. So from my perspective, it seems like people with higher sex drives must find a lot more things arousing than I do.
There's probably some truth to that. I mean, if you have a low enough sex drive, basically nothing is arousing, so it's probably true that certain interests become way more prominent when one's sex drive is up. But it doesn't mean horny people are turned on by everything--there still has to be some underlying inclination there.
