I remember reading that Anne McCaffrey has a lot of control over fandom and there is a limit to what people can do in RP's and fic, etc. There's some info here in this link to why she thinks tent pegs make you gay:

What the hell, here's the whole quote:

...what. I mean WHAT. Someone actually SAID that. The fact that there is a single person in the world who is that willfully ignorant makes me so depressed for humanity.

On the plus side, the general reaction of people to that comment is WHAT, so maybe there's hope for humanity after all? *hopes*

That one quote has made up my mind to never read/buy anything of her's ever.

At the risk of drawing the wrath of McCaffrey fans, you're not missing out on much. She creates interesting worlds but a lot of the stuff that goes on creeped me out, so I gave up reading her work long before I came across this quote. Lots of disturbing gender/power issues. (I've got the first three in the Pern series but they were second-hand purchases. They are actually quite decent, too.)

Speaking as a Pern fan, I (and many others) would agree with the comment. A lot. D:

Good to know it's not just me :) But it's a shame that it's true. I did love the Menolly books and was looking forward to reading the rest of her work. And while she did a great job creating worlds and societies, I got tired of the classism and disturbing power imbalances all over the place. And wasn't it the Damia series that had one character's powerful telepathy broadcasting her lovemaking sessions all over the galaxy? Yuck.

That quote never fails to horrify me whenever someone brings it up. I'm sure that in ten years time, when Anne is dead and gone, I will still be horrified by it. Thanks Anne!

I know. It's like, does she not listen to herself talk? (I do like that for many people, this quote is more of a legacy than her books will ever be, though.)

It's a sad, sad day when someone needs to look at porn to get the facts of life. If she had she'd know there's a whole class of very straight men who love to get it up the ass from hot women.

LOL! So true. And what about women who have anal sex? Although probably in her mind, a lady would never indulge in such an act.

Okay, I am now officially deciding to never read any of her work.

My mother has a bunch of her books, and I always thought maybe I'd give them a try some day. To hell with that.

I do own three of her books but I'm so happy they were second-hand purchases, I can't begin to tell you.

It's a shame she's crazy and has disturbing ideas about gender, class and sexuality because she does create fascinating worlds.

The Dragonriders of Pern is just about my very first fandom, and I'll always have a soft spot for these books, but yeah. She's a little scary.

In fandom's defense though, most of us look at that and go "Bwuht the fuck?" and just carry on in a slightly more reality based world. The solution for a heterosexual man bonding with a green dragon and being flown by a blue dragon with a male rider? He has a stand in chill with him while the flight is going on. Everyone's happy, and we can ignore the fact that our author is batshit insane and still play in her world.

The rules have relaxed a lot over the years, but you still gotta just sigh and shake your head at her.

That's the impression I got from the fandom_wank threads about the subject. I'm sorry if I gave the impression that the fandom overall was as crazy as she is, that's not what I meant at all.

Good to know that you guys found ways around her crazy rules. :)

(I still love the Menolly books and reread them from time to time but I still can't stop thinking "tent pegs!" every time I see McCaffery's name.)
