BECAUSE IT'S MYSOGINIST EVERYTHING NEEDS TO HAVE FEMALE CHARACTURS

I think that if what people want from Hetalia is pretty boys and nothing more, then it's delivering just fine. But the thing is that when countries are represented mostly by men...it's really strange. There ought to be an even gender split. It's strange that there isn't one.

It matters because the default form for humans should not be seen as male. I've seen some comments pointing out that there are things like magical girl shows which only have girls, but the thing is that countries are meant to represent everyone, women included. If the representation of so many countries is male, then it really is a bit sexist. And sexism adds up...

I think you're reading too much into it. It never came across to me that it disfranchises women at all. Maybe the author feels more comfortable with doing manga about guys or whatever, I doubt Hidekaz is going "ew, icky women" or anything like that. It would be nice if it ends up with a even sex split but the guy isn't required to do it.

Frankly, I don't see it any different than Sailor Moon where all the Sailor Scout are women.

It could be that it doesn't disenfranchise women that much. I haven't read the actual comics, just one or two profile pages, so I can't say that for sure.

True, he's not required to draw an even split, but the thing is that the characters are heavily skewed to men. I'm not saying he went "Wahahaha! I shall now perpetuate sexism deliberately!" but there is still an effect. It's hardly as if everything that has any sexism in it is deliberately done. In fact, most isn't. And it's okay to like a series which is like that - most series can't get away from sexism unless they try very hard indeed - but for those who do notice it, it's reasonable for them to dislike that element.

*shrugs* I think it's different from in Sailor Moon because the characters in Hetalia are supposed to be 'real' countries. As such, you'd imagine they'd at least represent the people who live in those countries a bit. A series focusing on men, fine. One focusing on women, that's fine too. But everyone on Earth is from a country. It's just odd. It's enough to put me off reading the series, at least.

But I still think you reading far too much into it. The guy is only doing this for fun. He probably thinks it's easier for him to write it with a majority of guys.

That's fine for him, but it doesn't really matter what he thinks. The thing he's created is what's being looked at.

Yeah, women have no place in politics or history. We can admit one or two if they're really exceptional (like, have brains almost as good as men), but more than that and you just lose the point.
