Oh, indeed! I've always really felt bad for him and his... Craziness. Especially in the early part of the series, oddly enough. Watching those episodes again knowing everything is kind of a punch in the gut. It's sort of hard to watch someone be cheerful when you know they're actually unstable and alone.

Oh, I know. The last few episodes have been sort of brutal. I have kind of a bad feeling about what might happen in the future.

I want to see more of him in his past. I want to know just how bad he was as a kid, and if he ever had a "prime of life," so to speak, when everything was relatively under control. He seemed pretty ok in the beginning of the series, just weird and probably too unaware of his own emotional state. He's said before that he doesn't feel much, but I've seen too much that contradicts that. I think he just doesn't know what he's feeling or how to get it out. So he has a lot going on in his head and doesn't know what to do with it, besides rationalizing everything and distracting himself.

(Sorry for the long comment! I just get carried away whenever I'm given the chance to speculate about Stein.)
