Amanda Tapping is an amazing human being. When I was a baby slasher I didn't like Sam Carter, but that's because I ran in some seriously misogynistic circles and fell into the same assholish behaviour. It was only when I wised the fuck up that I realised the Sam Carter is one of the best characters in any show ever, and Amanda Tapping lives up to her awesomeness. <3

Sam is still one of my favorite characters ever. I've heard that Tapping and the rest of the cast pushed back on some of the stuff TPTB wanted to do to make her look and act more "girly," and I'm glad she got to do it the way she wanted.

Tapping turned up for the first costume fitting and found they were going to put her in tight-fitting, cleavage-showing versions of the uniform and, thinking she was going to get fired, refused to wear them and insisted that Carter wear a proper uniform like the men wore. She did not get fired and they listened to her from then on.

I've heard nothing but positive things about her. If I have a girl, I'll definitely have her watch SG-1 (when she's old enough, lol). Sam's character was about being practical and getting the job done, and we need more of that. :)

... and our sons, too. More examples of intelligent, capable female characters who aren't overly sexualized or violent, who aren't loners, who are valued members of a team and not competing with everyone in sight.

I’ve been watching Stargate slowly for the first time and I’ve been really impressed with how they’ve written Carter so far! Maybe the only time I’ve seen where there was a weird thing with her (that I’m not sure they would have done if she were male)is when O’Neill is replaced by a teen version of him and she takes over a briefing he’s supposed to lead. The pilots are supposed to be disappointed it’s not him for the comic reveal of “O’Neill” getting into trouble with security when he decides he still wants to lead the briefing. But it lightly came off as the pilots disbelieving her credentials or take her word on what was going on over a teen boy they don’t know (as he’s able to convince the room in about 30 seconds flat that he’s O’Neill by the way he talks).

Sam is great. A friend who teaches girls ballet was looking for examples of female fictional characters who have a strong presence because she was going to do a class exercise relating to female role models in fiction. I mentioned Sam and then I said "although be warned, some of her story does involve her being caught up in feelings for a man" and then I correct myself.

Because sure, she has feelings for her superior. But he has feelings for her too. And the fact he respects her and the importance of her career is why he never truly acts on them until they're removed from one another's chain of command. I feel like that's worth stating because it's just so easy for the character in the position of power to just ignore what it means for their subordinate and act on their feelings regardless. But Sam is one of the smartest people at Stargate Command and the fact her career was never placed in jeopardy for anyone else means a lot to me.

I don't know who this lady is, but she does look pretty cute and, if you haven't met her, I hope you do in the future.

I did meet one of my author heroes and she didn't disappoint me then, but she did disappoint me when she sent all her Twitter minions to harass somebody.

I know a girl who was a huge fan of Amanda Tapping when she was like eleven and she managed to meet Amanda and said she was truly a wonderful person. IIRC Amanda actually wrote the girl a letter and at one point agreed to help her with a class project for school (I think the project had to do with GS-1 or maybe the Vancouver film industry or something). Which I believe because the girl had pictures of herself with Amanda at a couple different ages.

In short, yeah, she sounds like the best.

Amanda Tapping was my very first girl!crush. I've seen a bunch of her work and she's amazing in everything. One day I'd love to meet her.

I've met Amanda Tapping at a convention a few years ago and she was one of the nicest people there. She shook hands with everyone who came to her table and chatted with them for a bit. She was really lovely. <3
