D/s AU is superior to A/B/O and I hate that the latter is more popular now.

I mean does D/s need to be AU?

As far as I understand it, this was actually a thing that predates abo where, similar to abo, everyone was biologically determined to be either D or s, just without abo's buttbabies.

Huh, I've never come across it like that I think. I've never much been into it myself so I figured it was more of a rough top/bottom type of deal.

A/B/O is still popular? Maybe I'm in the wrong fandom's but I feel like it has waned a great deal.

Hurt/Comfort and Hurt No-Comfort tags do not belong in the same fic. It's either one or the other dammit.

Wouldn't Hurt No-Comfort be Angst? That's what I'd label it based on how it sounds.

Yes! That's what I thought too - it seems to be a newer tag I've seen on some fics when I've been looking for hurt/comfort fics, so I don't know if it's a new tag by itself or if its just there to accompany hurt/comfort tags (which I can thankfully can filter out on AO3, but I still don't get why its tagged like that)

Hard disagree. D/s AUs lack everything I find hot about a/b/o (pheromones, heats, knots, size-kink, self-lubing butts), but keep, or even exacerbate, a lot of the stuff I find squicky (a world of biological determinism, where one class of people is inherently subjugated and disempowered by their genetics, and society is structured around compulsory adherence to that unequal status quo).

Not kink shaming, just talking about personal squicks.

Yep, all of this. I've seen good A/B/O that subverted the formula and brought depth and complexity to the setting, but I've never seen a single D/s that was anything but 'toppy tops and subby subs'.

Same.

The thing is, a/b/o AUs don’t actually start from a place of biological determinism (they can, if the author wants them to, but it’s not inherent to the a/b/o premise). The fact of being an Omega dictates absolutely nothing at all about a character’s personality, interests, attitudes, behaviors, strengths, capacities, or the inherent dynamics of their interpersonal relationships.

Whereas D/s AUs start from a place of biological determinism. You can show subs being smart, strong, capable, brave, etc. But the universe dictates that, whatever else they are, they are submissive by nature. So if one isn’t into the biological determinism of it all, the trope probably just isn’t for them, because subverting said biological determinism is extremely difficult.

I’ve had a couple of ideas for D/s AUs I’d love to read, over the years. Ones that would deconstruct some of the squickier elements while still playing into the kinks to some extent. But I’m not much of a writer, I’m afraid--certainly not up to challenge an AU like that would pose.

AYRT:

I got into D/s AUs by Take Your Clothes Off as Directed by helenish, and stories in the similar vein that examined the discrimination subs faced.

You're not the anon they replied to, I am. I assume you meant to say you're the OP?

THIS. Main reason i rarely read D/s (and don't read any of the A/B/O that goes there).

You're wrong, but that's okay.
