I've always considered people who write only Modern & Highschool/University AU's to be lazy, uninspired, and bad at creative writing.

DA

I'm always shocked that there are people out there who want to relive school through fiction. Like, damn, I got my fill in real life, last thing I need is to watch my favorite characters suffer through it too. :P

i prefer high school A!Us because my school life was absolute trash, and i like imagining it to be better than it actually was.

Yeah, I think this is a big part of what's great about high school AUs.

I don't like them in every fandom. But for some fandoms, I love them.

Honestly, it doesn't help that a majority of HS/college/modern AU's are so poorly written in the first place, and I'm sure there's good ones out there! But let's be real... most of them aren't and yet they'll clog up the tag of any popular fandom/ship.

it's the "write what you know" trap. And many young writers only know high school.

That's a piece of advice that needs to be consigned to a dumpster fire. It causes way too much trouble for what it's not worth.

Same. I also particularly hate how lazy it is to be like 'in canon these characters are English knights / Japanese swordsmen / Chinese nobility, but in this AU they are both highschoolers and American! Because research is for suckers!'

Honestly, agreed. AUs can be incredibly creative and fascinating, but high school/university AUs inevitably strip away everything that made the canon interesting in the first place. You could do modern AUs of just about any canon and keep them fairly true to the original in terms of tone and characterization if you wanted to, but that requires, you know, actual creativity and thought.
