She wants him.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-27 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Literally why though.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-27 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Because she loves him. This isn't that difficult.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-27 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Because based on what the audience was shown, she loathed him in the first movie, was mildly sexually attracted to him, but ultimately loathed him in the second movie, and suddenly decided in the 3rd movie that maybe sexual attraction and loathing are kind of like love if you throw the Force at it hard enough.

Yeah, I'm all for Beauty and the Beast, but Kylo Ren wasn't the Beast, he was Gaston.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-27 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know -- people in town actually liked Gaston. Kylo's more like the pipe organ in the direct to video Christmas movie.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-27 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
It is pretty difficult, though, because he has no redeeming qualities and there's no reason for her to be obsessed with him other than "well she just is".

(Anonymous) 2020-09-27 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, this.

He spends most of the trilogy as the worst kind of "fixer upper." He's the sort of guy who gets drunk at a party, punches your drywall, and then cries about his mother over the bloody knuckles. And having been there, done that, get that boy a therapist!

If they'd given him a different backstory (one where his bitterness and rage are more justified), and nixed a lot of his most heinous actions in TFA, I think Rey's attraction in TLJ, and her growing desire to help him, would make a decent amount of emotional sense.

But as it is, yeah, I agree. Kylo Ren started off as Darth Vader 2.0, The Incel Terrorist Edition. Then Rian Johnson was like, "What if...Kylo Ren...but Zuko style!" (which would've been great if the groundwork was there, but it emphatically was not.) Then JJ Abrams was like, "Jesus fucking Christ, fine, he's Darth fucking Zuko, but I'm phoning this shit in because it's not what I wanted!"
