I rarely describe the physical appearance of my characters in fic (they're based on actors - readers know what they look like), and I actually hate both fic and original writing that puts too much time into describing appearances. So that doesn't bother me. Getting past the personality/characterization is harder, especially because you usually don't have to do as much foundational work on that with fanworks since you're already writing about known characters. So, not only would you need to change that, but you'd need to develop a lot more of your own.
