Sounds like my experience in reverse, heh.

It's possible being truthful about what you saw would've changed things, or maybe it would've only postponed the inevitable. Anyone who willingly goes on to form a cult of personality doesn't sound like anyone I'd nominate to stay behind.

I was thinking more about sparing the ones that followed them into the cult. One person escaped and told me about their experiences.
