I've seen some variation of this is every fandom I've been in.

In one, there was a "deleted" scene that no one was ever able to find or watch that proved that the villain they were crushing on was actually sweet and gentle.

In another, every time a new season of the show was coming out, it was going to prove all their fan theories and head canons correct, as well as proving that their ships were cannon.

If you're old enough to remember a time when people built websites for their ships, you would remember pages of "evidence" that basically amounted to "Character A asked Character B for some ketchup for their fries before they asked their other friends, and that's how you know they're in love."

It's just something fandom does whether they're disappointed or not. *shrug*
