description that hits the highlights but doesn't go on and on into detail ad nauseum is better.

I agree completely; sometimes I like a full description, but honestly, I'm generally fine with a few "he had wild dark hair and striking eyes, and the kind of smile that....etc." like that kind of description tends to work, especially if you really go into the personality (even that physical description kind of hints at his personality-- possibly). I just like being able to use my imagination, but sometimes I also like having an. actor or someone to base it on

I can see that, sure. But you're description of an actor may not, in fact, bring that actor to people's mind, as we all see things a little differently, you know? And people are kinda...similar, particularly actors. *Most* of them are attractive and fit.

DA - there's more than enough proof that fan writers see the same actors differently too! How many different hair colors, eye colors, heights and builds have been used to describe the same damn person? It's especially bad when reading fic that uses the dreaded epithets and you're sitting there wondering who the hell the "blond" or the "shorter man" is supposed to be.

This is probably why I hate the over- and misuse of physical descriptions in fic, come to think of it.

YES!
Homg. I hate Dean Winchester being described as 'blond'. Wth.
