Keeping in mind it’s been a long while since I’ve read it and my mind may change after watching S3, even with all Akito’s trauma I just felt like some of the things she did couldn’t be washed away so easily ( she literally almost killed Rin, for example) so a bit ‘cool motive, still murder’ for me.

There's a sequel to Fruits Basket, where this is addressed. Akito didn't actually get away with it, everyone except Shigure and Tohru distanced themselves from her, and her son is bullied and was almost murdered by people, who still keep a grudge against her.
